Baseball & Softball Coaching:The No Glove Drill

Baseball Coaching: No Glove Fielding Drill, teaches players to move laterally fielding grounders. Moving the feet to field ground balls allows players to get into a proper fielding position. It enables them to square their body to the ball, which provides a better angle for fielding and makes it easier to make accurate throws afterward. Reaching with the glove without moving the feet can lead to off-balance fielding attempts and compromises defensive efficiency. The No Glove Drill is a fun activity where players move to the ball!

Moving your feet laterally instead of just reaching with the glove hand is crucial in baseball fielding, particularly when it comes to ground balls. Here's why:

  1. Positioning: Moving your feet laterally allows you to position yourself properly to field the ground ball. By getting in front of the ball, you establish a better angle for fielding and have more control over the play. Reaching with your glove hand without moving your feet can lead to off-balance positioning, making it harder to field the ball cleanly.

  2. Balance and Stability: Lateral foot movement helps maintain balance and stability while fielding ground balls. When you move your feet, you can adjust your body position to maintain a stable base, making it easier to react to the ball and make a clean fielding play. Simply reaching with your glove hand can result in an unstable position, compromising your ability to field the ball cleanly and make an accurate throw.

  3. Quickness and Agility: Moving your feet laterally allows you to react quickly to the direction and speed of the ground ball. Fielding requires agility, and by using lateral footwork, you can quickly get into a position to field the ball cleanly. Reaching with your glove hand limits your mobility and can result in slower reaction times, increasing the chances of mishandling the ball or missing the play altogether.

  4. Glove-to-Throwing Hand Transfer: Lateral foot movement enables a smooth transition from fielding to throwing. By positioning yourself properly, you set up an efficient path for transferring the ball from your glove hand to your throwing hand. This seamless transition saves time and allows for quicker and more accurate throws. Reaching with your glove hand without moving your feet can make the transfer more awkward and hinder your throwing motion.

  5. Injury Prevention: Moving your feet laterally helps reduce the risk of injury. By utilizing proper footwork, you minimize strain on your upper body and avoid awkward reaching positions that can lead to injuries like strains, sprains, or twists.

In summary, moving your feet laterally instead of solely relying on your glove hand when fielding ground balls is essential for successful fielding in baseball. It improves your positioning, balance, stability, quickness, agility, and facilitates a smooth glove-to-throwing hand transfer. By emphasizing proper footwork, you enhance your ability to field the ball cleanly and make accurate throws, while also reducing the risk of injuries.
